On December 19, the lights illuminating the front of Roanoke Rapids High School will be turned off and candles will be placed in the windows of the historic Senior Building in a celebration of the Christmas season.
Christmas at the Castle, which begins at 6 p.m., is being held in partnership with the Roanoke Rapids High School Alumni & Friends Association and the high school. It is being sponsored by the Halifax County Convention and Visitors Bureau and Lowe’s Home Improvement, the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District.

Phil Hux, president of the association, said, “The candles will enhance the beauty of the school. We’re going to turn the highlights at the front of the school off so that you can see the beauty of the candles in the window.”
Said Hux: “What we’re doing is highlighting the beauty of the school and making people aware of its history.”
With an association project underway to replace 50-year-old blinds in the senior building, the new blinds will also help enhance the school’s beauty, Hux said. There are still 30 blinds left to purchase at a cost of $250 each and include a brass tag to honor the donors or whomever a donor wishes to recognize.
The RRGSD said the event will include the RRHS Concert Choir and Jingle Bell Jackets of the school’s band performing as the candles are placed in each of the Senior Building’s front windows.
Once the building is lit from within, Santa will come out of the high school for photo opportunities.
The RRHS Band Boosters will be selling hot chocolate in commemorative mugs, fresh cookies and Christmas at the Castle ornaments.
The RRHS Chorus will have T-shirts available for purchase. Cash App and Paypal are accepted as well as cash.
“The front of the building will be beautifully decorated and there will be a special Christmas tree with blank ornaments to write on, so alumni can leave their name and graduation year on the tree,” the RRGSD said.
Visitors are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets.
No pets are allowed.
