The City of Roanoke Rapids is accepting applications for the following positions:

Police Chief (Police Department)

The Police Chief is a part of the City Management Team and will share responsibility of supporting programs, exercising control and supervision of the department budget, and must be willing to contribute as a member of the City Management Team in achieving the goals and overall mission of the City.  

The candidate must have a proven record of leadership within a law enforcement setting and the ability to inspire confidence as a representative of the Police Department and the City. The Chief of Police must have in-depth knowledge of the federal, state, and municipal laws relating to the functions of his/her subordinates and department, and must have an extensive knowledge of police policy, rules and regulations, and police standards. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in community policing is vital.

The successful candidate must be willing to maintain a visible profile in the community. He/she must have a positive track record building strong relationships and fostering effective channels of communication with elected officials, the general public, law enforcement agencies, city executives, and among the rank and file. The candidate must have a verifiable track record of unimpeachable ethics and integrity, projecting a positive professional image and setting the example for all subordinate personnel of the department. The successful candidate must have the proven leadership and management skills to build a strong leadership team and a highly trained, empowered, and diverse workforce. He/she must also be proficient in fiscal management.

The candidate must reside or relocate to 10 mile radius of the City limits within one year of employment.  

Salary: Range $63,156.14 - $93,737.02 annual salary (depending on qualifications)

Minimum Requirements: 9 years in law enforcement, 3 years’ experience in leadership positions

Preferred Requirements: 10 years in law enforcement, 5 years in leadership positions in a similar or larger department, bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or public administration.

Position reports directly to the City Manager.

Applicant must have a High School education or equivalent with completion of all basic requirements of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Standards Commission for a certified police officer. Possession of an appropriate valid North Carolina driver's license; possession of the Basic Law Enforcement Certificate awarded by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Standards Commission.

Applicants will be screened and participate in an assessment center as part of the selection process.

Equipment Mechanic (Public Works Department)

An employee in this class serves as a skilled mechanic in the garage. The employee performs responsible and specialized skilled mechanical work on a variety of automotive, construction and specialized equipment which will include, but not limited to, mechanical work repairing gasoline and diesel motors and engines, and performing preventative maintenance, particularly on heavy equipment.  The work requires operation of various test equipment and hand tools in order to support the work in both inside and outside environments. Qualifications include graduation from high school supplemented by course work in repair and maintenance of heavy equipment and engines and considerable experience in the automotive and heavy equipment repair. Police Officer (Roanoke Rapids Police Department)

An employee in this class performs a full range of general law enforcement duties to protect life and property in the City.   Basic Law Enforcement Training is preferred but not required. ( Open Until Filled)

MUNICIPAL OFFICES CLOSED/TRASH COLLECTION: Municipal offices will be closed on Thursday, July 4, 2019 in observance of Independence Day. Trash collection routes for Thursday will be collected on Wednesday, July 3rd.
