Fire gutted an apartment and caused smoke damage to an adjoining unit Saturday, according to the Roanoke Rapids Fire Department.

Lieutenant Bryan Hollowell said there were no injuries.

Firefighters responded to 801 East Littleton Road at the British Woods Apartments shortly after 11 a.m. and observed fire showing from the front door and a window of the apartment.

The fire appeared to have originated in the stove area and extended into the attic.

Hollowell said firefighters suspect that an occupant who was moving in might have mistakenly bumped the "on" switch of the handicapped-accessible stove, which has its switches at waist level.

An adjacent apartment sustained smoke damage; however, the occupant was able to exit safely and without injury. "We are grateful for the quick response and teamwork displayed by all agencies involved. Thanks to their efforts, no injuries were reported," Hollowell said.

A total of 12 off-duty Roanoke Rapids firefighters responded to assist, along with mutual aid from the Davie Fire Department, Rheasville Fire Department, Roanoke Valley Rescue Squad, and Halifax County EMS.
