The Roanoke Rapids Parks and Recreation Department will participate in Take a Child Outside Week at the Roanoke Canal Museum on Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

"It’s just a day to encourage children to go outside and experience nature," said parks and recreation Director Kelly Daughtry. "We like to participate in that and over the years have had events during that week."

Parks Superintendent Thomas Goble said the Friends of the Canal will be helping, and there will be a station to make bracelets out of natural materials.

There will also be an opportunity for a family tree so attendees can adopt one of the trees at the beginning of the trail. "They pick a tree and we’ll take their picture in front of the tree and have a little ID card made," Goble said. "That will have their name, what kind of tree it is, the date, and then we’ll laminate it for them so from year to year they can come check on their tree."

Snacks will also be provided.
