The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a Roanoke Rapids man found in a Weldon roadway early Saturday morning.

At approximately 3:26 a.m., deputies responded to a call on East Eleventh Street in Weldon regarding a male lying in the road. 

Upon arrival, authorities identified the man as 28-year-old Eric Short Jr. 

Halifax County EMS personnel confirmed that Short was deceased at the scene. Preliminary observations indicate the victim had sustained an apparent gunshot wound.

The sheriff’s office Criminal Investigations Division is currently following up on all available leads.
