A Halifax County Detention Center officer was charged Monday with providing tobacco or vapor products to an inmate, according to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

The warrant alleges that Xzhavier Montre Robinson, 24, of Roanoke Rapids, provided a RAZ nicotine vaporizer to an inmate inside the jail.

Sheriff Tyree Davis said detention staff received credible information from inmates regarding possible contraband being brought into the facility. In response, detention personnel and agents with the drug and gang task force immediately initiated what the sheriff described as a thorough investigation into the allegations. He said some of the contraband was recovered from inside the jail during the investigation.

Robinson had been a detention officer for two and a half months.

“The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center do not accept any conduct that compromises the safety, security, and integrity of its detention operations,” Davis said. “Any employee who violates the law, breaches the public trust, or fails to uphold the standards of this office will be held fully accountable.”

At its core, Davis said the matter is about a breach of trust. “A detention officer is in a position of authority inside a controlled environment, and introducing contraband undermines safety and can open the door to bigger issues. We are thankful for the inmates providing the information and for the staff for investigating the incidents. In this instance, the inmates told on the detention officer for doing wrong. The good officers investigated the bad officer, and today the good guys won. This is an example where no individual, regardless of position, is above the law.”

Robinson received a $750 bond and is scheduled to appear in district court on June 3.
