A Roanoke Rapids man faces a felony charge and remains held without bond following an early morning domestic assault investigation this morning, according to Major Anzell Harris of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

Arthur Lee Bennett Jr., 55, was arrested by deputies shortly after the assault was reported this morning.

Deputies responded to ECU Health North Hospital around 7 to speak with a female victim of a domestic assault.

The victim told law enforcement that Bennett put her in a chokehold during an argument at a residence located in the 800 block of Highway 903. Deputies noted that the assault caused visible bruising and pain around the victim's neck.

Following the interview, Sergeant A. Wood obtained an arrest warrant for Bennett.

He faces the following charges:

Felony assault by strangulation

Assault on a female

Misdemeanor crime of domestic violence

D-Squad deputies located Bennett at his residence.

Bennett was transported to the Halifax County Detention Center. Because the charges are domestic violence-related, he is currently being held without the opportunity for bond.

Bennett is scheduled to make his first appearance in Halifax County District Court Wednesday.
