The Roanoke Rapids Police Department is currently investigating a burglary that occurred in the early morning hours of May 25 in the area of Fifteenth Street.
Chief Lawrence Wiggins said an elderly male was home alone asleep when he reported at least two males broke into his residence.
The victim advised the males came into his bedroom and stole a cabinet containing money and other items. The victim, who served in the United States Marine Corps, advised one of the items taken were his dog tags.
A canine track was conducted and about a block from his residence the file cabinet was located along with some items belonging to the victim.
It is believed the suspects fled the residence on foot as the track led officers along the train tracks. No assault occurred during this burglary.
At this time investigators are encouraging members of the community with cameras and live in the area of East Fifteenth Street, Virginia and Carolina Avenue to review video and report if you see anyone running through the area between the time frame of 3:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m.
