A convicted felon who allegedly stole a Mercedes from a business in Whitakers and was spotted in Weldon on Thursday was arrested after a 15-mile pursuit, according to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.
Major Anzell Harris said Tyrone D. Williams, 29, of Fayetteville, refused to stop after Deputy D. Bybee began following him. Speeds during the pursuit reached approximately 90 mph in a 45 mph zone as Williams passed vehicles illegally, ran stop signs and traffic lights, and drove between vehicles in traffic.

Corporal D. Wilson ended the pursuit by deploying tire deflation devices, causing two of the vehicle’s tires to deflate.

Harris said Williams fled into a wooded area while carrying a handgun. He was located shortly after and taken into custody.
He was admitted to the Halifax County Detention Center shortly after 8:15 p.m. and was denied bail.
Williams was charged with:
Possession of a stolen motor vehicle
Felon in possession of a firearm
Resisting, obstructing, or delaying an officer
Driving while license revoked
Felony fleeing to elude arrest in a motor vehicle
Williams had previously been convicted of breaking and entering with the intent to commit a felony in Hoke County, according to court records. The crime occurred in 2019, and he was sentenced in June 2022 to two years and three months in prison.
Court records also show he was out on bond for charges of possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and trafficking in methamphetamine in Cumberland County.
“The sheriff's office would like to thank the HCSO patrol A Squad, the Halifax Regional Drug and Gang Task Force, the HCSO Criminal Investigations Division, and the Weldon Police Department for their assistance during the pursuit and apprehension of Williams,” Sheriff Tyree Davis said.
Williams has a July 22 district court appearance in Halifax County.
