A Roanoke Rapids man was charged Tuesday after a single-vehicle collision with a light pole which also damaged a septic tank.

Roanoke Rapids police Chief Bobby Martin said in a statement Douglas Whitby III, 22, faces charges of DWI, damage to property and possession of drug paraphernalia. 

He received a $2,500 bond and September 25 court date.

Martin said in a statement that shortly after 11:15 a.m.Officer J. DeSare responded to the area of West Tenth Street near Westside Grocery about a collision.

Master Officer H. Grimes informed DeSare the driver appeared to be impaired.

DeSare observed the driver was reportedly nodding off and had very slurred speech. The officer noticed a straw with a white residue in the floorboard and located a folded paper with a white powder in it believed to be fentanyl.

Whitby was arrested on suspicion of DWI and carried before a magistrate.
