A Roanoke Rapids man faces numerous traffic and other charges following a chase Saturday night, according to the Roanoke Rapids Police Department.

Shortly after 8 p.m. Officer D. Newsome responded to the area of Julian R. Allsbrook Highway and Hamilton Street about the driver of a commercial vehicle swerving and running stop signs.

Chief Bobby Martin said in a statement the vehicle, which was reportedly driven by a man later identified as Justin Nowell, 36, at one point swerved into oncoming traffic and back to its lane, striking the curb.

Newsome attempted to stop the driver.

Nowell continued to ignore the lights and sirens of patrol vehicles while Lieutenant J. Baggett set up at Georgia Avenue and Tenth Street and deployed Stop Sticks which the truck hit on the driver’s side front tire.

With the tire pressure going down, Nowell continued driving until he reached the area of the 1400 block of Washington Street and pulled into a driveway.

Officers eventually got Nowell out of the vehicle and on the ground. He was taken into custody without injury.

Nowell was charged with the following: A warrant for arrest for larceny of a motor vehicle, driving while impaired, failure to maintain lane control, four counts of fail to stop for a stop sign, flee to elude arrest, reckless driving to endanger others’ property, failure to stop for lights and siren, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, resist delay and obstruct, no operator’s license, damage to property, and drive left of center.

He was also wanted by state probation and parole for violations. He received a $20,000 bond and January 6 court date.

Investigation determined the vehicle was stolen from Virginia.

Martin said this evening the damage to property count reflects damage to a vehicle done the previous day and  damage to the stolen vehicle.

There were no injuries reported as a result of the erratic driving.

Sergeant R. Cross and officers J. Wind and A. Radford assisted.
