Two men were killed and four others were injured in a head-on crash along Highway 158 in the Jackson area Monday evening.

The Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald of Ahoskie reported North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper D.J. Brake identified the deceased as Jalik Jaquan Fields, 20, of Roanoke Rapids and 22-year-old Charles Futrell Jr. of Knightdale.

Brake said Fields was the driver of a 1999 Toyota passenger car with Futrell as his passenger. There were two other passengers in that vehicle and both were airlifted to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. Brake said he was still working on learning the identity of those two individuals.

The trooper said that Fields was traveling east on Highway 158 shortly before 6 p.m. and caused the crash by passing another vehicle in a no-passing zone in an area just west of Boones Mill Pond. His vehicle then collided head-on with a 2014 Chrysler passenger car, traveling west, driven by 30-year-old Darnell Shaeef Holder of Jacksonville.

Brake said Holder and a passenger, 34-year-old Jhonice Jones of Dolphin, Virginia, were injured and taken to a local hospital. The extent of their injuries is unknown.
