Roanoke Rapids police identified the victim of a Sunday morning house fire as a 71-year-old man.

Chief Bobby Martin said in a statement this morning Raymond Rainey died from injuries sustained in the fire, which was reported in the 100 block of Jackson Street near Food Lion.

Firefighters got Rainey, the sole occupant of the house, out and he was taken by Halifax County EMS to Vidant North. The police department learned later the man did not survive the fire.

The police and fire department worked together to investigate the cause of the fire, which was reported shortly after 9 a.m.

Foul play is not suspected. A cause has not been determined.

There was a wood stove in the living room area, which is believed to be where the fire started.
