The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office has requested the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to investigate the death of a 71-year-old inmate at the detention center.

Sheriff Wes Tripp said foul play is not suspected.

In a statement the sheriff said around 12:30 p.m. today Ronald Anthony McDonald of the Enfield area experienced a medical issue. Tripp declined to elaborate on the medical issue.

Detention staff called Halifax County EMS which transported the man to a local hospital where he later succumbed.

McDonald had been incarcerated at the jail since May 4 and was awaiting a June 17 district court appearance for second-degree burglary and injury to real property.
