People will encounter delays next week crossing Highway 48 over the Roanoke River while crews perform bridge maintenance.

Workers with the North Carolina Department of Transportation will repair the expansion joints, which help provide a smoother ride and protect the girders supporting the driving deck.

The work will require one of the two lanes to be closed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. During this time, truck drivers and other motorists will take turns crossing the bridge under flagging operations.

People should be cautious traveling through the work zone and expect a longer commute.
