The Center for Energy Education hosted its first KidWind Challenge last week.

Over 42 students designed, constructed, and tested small-scale wind turbines and solar structures as part of the challenge.

Also present were 13 school educators for the hands-on design challenge.

Students and educators represented Chaloner Middle School, William R. Davie Middle School, Weldon Middle School, Edward W. Wyatt Middle School, as well as Roanoke Rapids Early College and Northwest Collegiate Technical Academy.

Visitors from Halifax Community College and The New College Institute of Virginia were a part of the audience as well.

The event was one of three in-person 2022 KidWind Challenges for Virginia & North Carolina. The team from Chaloner Middle School will represent the region at the state level KidWind competition in May.

Winning teams from the Virginia and North Carolina Wind and Solar Competition will advance to the National KidWind Challenge.

The program held at C4EE received support from Dominion Energy, and the Center for the Advancement of Sustainable Energy and James Madison University.
