Repairs to a bridge on Aurelian Springs Road near Blue Sky Road will take longer than anticipated, requiring the road to remain closed for at least another month.

On Monday, maintenance crews for the North Carolina Department of Transportation began working on the bridge south of Weldon because the pavement was settling.

Upon further investigation, inspectors discovered two end bents supporting the bridge shifted and needed to be repaired.

An end bent is a part of the bridge that helps support the portion of the bridge that motorists drive on.

The department is evaluating options for either repairing or replacing the bridge.

The road will remain closed until at least August 12.
