A Rocky Mount woman died Sunday afternoon in a single vehicle crash on Ita Road in the Hollister area.
Trooper W.H. Wheeler of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said Carlnella Sears, 21, was traveling south on the road shortly before 3 p.m.
She traveled off the road to the right. She came back on the road left of the center line and then went off the roadway to the left. The vehicle collided with a ditch and then crashed into a tree. The vehicle caught fire but the woman was pulled out before the vehicle became engulfed. It was not immediately clear who pulled her out.
Wheeler said Sears was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. He said speed was a factor.
The trooper said he doesn’t suspect alcohol or drug use to be a factor. He is awaiting a medical examiner’s report.
