A winter coat drive in which nearly 300 coats were distributed Saturday was deemed a success, Roanoke Rapids police Chief Bobby Martin said.

“Any time you give nearly 300 coats out, that’s tremendous,” Martin said.

Captain Gorton Williams and Stephanie Credle, who runs Lily’s Boutique on Roanoke Avenue, started the drive.

“Me and her got together before the weather broke,” Williams said. “It was an awesome thing. Anything you can do to help and give back to the community is a blessing.”

The coats were distributed Saturday at the green space at 1026 Roanoke Avenue with assistance from Citizens on Patrol.

The new coats were just not for children but adults as well, Williams said. There were also sweaters and scarves included and the organizers also gave away toys.

Coats that were not given away during the three hours Saturday morning were taken to another coat drive.
