A joint effort between the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and Roanoke Rapids police led to the capture and arrest of a man in the larceny of a firearm.

Captain Scott Hall of the sheriff’s office said around 5 p.m. Thursday Deputy D. Bybee was responding to a call of the larceny when he talked with the victim and received vehicle and travel information.

Bybee also heard a service call for the police department in which the suspect vehicle had been seen on Anna Louise Lane. A man, who was later identified as Christopher Short, 23, exited and ran into the woods carrying a bag.

Deputy N. Estes, who is a canine handler, Bybee and police officers assisted in the search for the man.

Sergeant S. Langley of the police department observed a person get into a car which left the area while Master Officer N. Powell and Officer B. Holcombe spotted and stopped the vehicle at the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Old Farm Road.

Short, of Roanoke Rapids, was a passenger in the vehicle and Hall said he was in possession of a bag which contained two firearms, one of them the stolen weapon.

He was arrested and charged with larceny of a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm, and felon in possession of a firearm.

He received a $15,000 secured bond and October 10 court date.
