The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following, according to Chief Shane Guyant:
On Sunday Sergeant D. Newsome was dispatched to a welfare check of a male at a restaurant on Tenth Street.
The man, identified as Jose Heriberto Contreras Lopez, 44, of Jefferson Street was reported to be asleep with the engine running while in the drive-through line.
Newsome was advised that Lopez was very intoxicated and was leaving the parking lot.
Newsome conducted a traffic stop.
Master Officer K. Williams observed several open containers inside of the vehicle.
Lopez was charged with DWI, driving left of center and open container.
He has a November 17 court date.
On October 19 agents with the Halifax Regional Drug Task Force, along with officers of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department investigations and patrol bureaus, and deputies with the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office conducted an organized saturation patrol operation inside the city limits of Roanoke Rapids.
Throughout the operation, the following were conducted:
48 traffic stops
20 citations issued
9 vehicle searches
1 arrest
1 firearm confiscated
1 vehicle/foot pursuit
Towards the end of the operation, task force agents C. Batchelor and T. Acree
attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a white Cadillac in the area of Hinson Street due to an observed vehicle equipment violation.
The driver, Tyrone “Nookie” Johnson, 48, of Melody Lane, refused to stop which resulted in a vehicle pursuit that eventually ended on Carver Street where Johnson fled on foot.
Johnson was immediately caught by Acree.
A small quantity of cocaine was located in the vehicle.
Johnson was charged with the following:
Driving while license revoked
Felony possession of cocaine
Felony flee/elude arrest with a motor vehicle
Fail to heed blue lights/siren
Fail to stop for a stop sign
Careless and reckless driving
Resist, delay, obstruct
Rear lamp violation
Speeding
Possession of drug paraphernalia
Fail to maintain lane control
On October 15 Officer B. Holcomb conducted a vehicle stop for a tag light violation at the entrance to ECU North Hospital.
The plate was completely dark and could not be read.
A probable cause search due to the odor of marijuana resulted in locating less than a half-ounce of marijuana.
Savion Xavier Cole, 19, of Roanoke Rapids, was cited for simple possession of marijuana and given a court date of November 3.
On October 14 during the early morning hours, Lieutenant M. Hunsucker was patrolling near Old Farm Road and Highway 158 when he observed a vehicle collision between Sheetz and Burger King.
One of the drivers, Johnny Donnell Perkins, of Henderson, showed physical signs of impairment.
Perkins was requested to perform standardized field sobriety testing and to provide roadside breath samples.
Perkins was found to have a blood alcohol content of .15.
He was charged with DWI and unsafe movement.
