Roanoke Rapids police are looking for a man who Chief Shane Guyant said on January 3 assaulted a blind man.

Clinton Reade Powell, 70, faces charges of simple assault and second-degree trespassing. There is also an outstanding order for his arrest for felony larceny of a motor vehicle which was lodged by the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and is related to a July, 2022 crime.

Last week Guyant said the police department responded to an assault at a housing complex off West Tenth Street. Officer M. Morris learned the victim was blind.

The victim said in a statement to police he had allowed Powell to stay with him because Powell, a former neighbor, was homeless.

However, during the early morning hours of January 3, the victim reportedly asked Powell to leave due to an argument and told police that Powell began to punch him in the face. He left the victim lying in a chair with minor injuries to his face.
