A Roanoke Rapids man faces domestic assault and other charges following a call Wednesday morning at Meadowbrook Trailer Court off Fourth Avenue.

Roanoke Rapids police Chief Shane Guyant said officers responded to the residence around 4 a.m. after receiving a report that a man later identified as Torian Whitaker entered the residence and assaulted a woman inside.

The 32-year-old Whitaker had left the scene as Master Officer D. Norfleet was arriving. Norfleet observed Whitaker and made a stop.

Norfleet detected the odor of alcohol on Whitaker, who also showed several signs of impairment.

Whitaker was arrested and transported to the police department where he submitted to a test of his breath alcohol.  Whitaker registered a breath sample of .13 and was taken before a magistrate in Halifax where he was charged with DWI, driving while license revoked, and open container as well as the misdemeanor domestic assault call.

Halifax County Detention Center records show he is no longer in custody.

He has a February 20 district court date.
