Halifax County Schools has begun phase two construction at the former Eastman School site with demolition work underway.

“The phase two construction represents a crucial step forward in realizing this vision,” the school system said. “The five pillars of construction are demolition, underground and foundations, vertical, finishes, and landscaping.”

Superintendent Eric Cunningham said, "We are thrilled to see phase two of construction underway at the Eastman School site. This project underscores our dedication to enhancing educational opportunities for our students and investing in the future of our community."

The school is encouraging anyone who may have Eastman memorabilia and artifacts to share them with the new school. It is also seeking individuals who know the Eastman history and can speak with the muralist. Call 252-583-5111.

On May 16 the school system held a community meeting at Ivory Hill Baptist Church led by board member Charles Hedgepeth and Cunningham.

Updates were provided on the new Halifax Pre-K-8 School. Survey results regarding the school name, colors, and mascot were also shared. Cunningham will make a recommendation at the June board meeting. "This school has been in the making since its doors closed in 2009. It has been 14 years of community advocacy and commitment to finally reach the stage that we are at now."
