Barbara Jean Medlin Matthews, also known as “Bob” to family and friends, died Friday November 2, 2018. She was 78.

Barbara Jean was a native of Halifax County, the daughter of the late J.W. Medlin Jr. and Ellie Francis Medlin.

A longtime Baptist, she was a retired bookkeeper with the textile mills and other businesses around town.

She started as the credit manager for Leggett’s Department Store in the 1960’s.

A lifetime learner, she took accounting classes at the Community College during her lunch hours.

“Bob” was also an avid Baker, making amazing scratch made biscuits and desserts, and loved arranging get togethers for family and friends. She also loved sewing when her daughter Lisa was born, and Lisa loved the clothes she made for her.

Barbara is survived by her husband; Carlton Matthews, son; David Matthews, daughter; Lisa May and her husband James of Elm City, sister; Faye Thomason of Highland, Md., sister-in-law; Phyllis M. Sievers of Florida, brother-in-law; Bobby Thomason, granddaughter; Lauren May of Raleigh, niece; Teresa Young and husband Mike and their children Rebecca and Mickey of Severn, Md., and a special cousin Joyce Balmer.

Graveside Services will be held Monday, November 5, 2018, at 2:00 P.M. at Cedarwood Cemetery with Rev. C.J. Cauble officiating.

The family will receive friends Sunday, November 4, 2018 from 7:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Wrenn, Clarke and Hagan Funeral and Cremation Service.
