Roanoke Rapids Deputy Chief Andy Jackson said the department, as of this report, had received 14 reports with more coming in.
Whether these were tied to eight reported over the weekend is something that is still being investigated.
Bank cards, wallets and other items were taken from unlocked vehicles, Jackson said. “We encourage people to remove all valuable items from their cars, particularly if they make that decision to leave them unlocked.”
The police department is also encouraging residents to leave their front porch lights on. “It's really hard to see what's moving in the dark, particularly on cloudy nights.”
The overnight break-ins were reported in the 400-900 blocks of Franklin; the 800-1000 blocks of Cedar; the 800 block of Henry and the 600 block of Vance.
What has been driving the break-ins is difficult to determine, Jackson said. “I would dare say the root is narcotics, the need and desire for narcotics, especially heroin.”
