Fire destroyed a mobile home on Delta Drive late this afternoon, according to the Davie Volunteer Fire Department.

One occupant was taken to the hospital for a cut he sustained when he broke out a window to successfully retrieve the family's cat, Chief David Padgett said.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene off Airbase Road shortly before 5:15 p.m.

Padgett said the single-wide was “pretty much” much engulfed when Davie and Rheasville firefighters arrived at the scene.

Thomas Huggins was asleep in a back bedroom and his wife, Brenda Huggins, was in the living room.

Padgett said they were both able to safely get out, but realized their cat was still inside. That's when Mr. Huggins broke out a window to retrieve the pet and sustained the cut to his arm.

It is believed the fire may have started in a middle bedroom where a water heater was located in a closet.

Padgett said Mrs. Huggins opened the door to that room, only to see black smoke. The fire chief said he believes it may have started in the area around the water heater.

The family lost all their possessions. They have family in the area and the American Red Cross was dispatched to the scene to help them with temporary accommodations.

Halifax County EMS was dispatched to the scene and the Halifax County Sheriff's Office provided traffic assistance.
