Roanoke Rapids police offers answered 16 calls of motor vehicle break-ins over the night and early morning hours of Saturday and Sunday.

Chief Chuck Hasty said some of the calls involved multiple vehicles at each residence. He said the calls involved break-ins of mainly unlocked vehicles in the Rochelle Pond area.

Some vehicles were rifled through and in some cases items were taken including book bags, laptop bags, jewelry, iPods, monoculars, knives, cell phones, flashlights and loose change.

“I would encourage the citizens to report suspicious activity in their neighborhoods to the police,” Hasty said in a statement.

He offered the following tips:

• Park in well-lit areas so your vehicle can be seen at all times

• Put away electronics and the GPS, don’t forget the cords and mounts

• Put your valuables in the trunk, out of sight.

• Lock all the doors and close the windows, including the sun roof.

• Keep the glove box and center console locked.
