Some didn't buy plates — they just gave donations.

“We had a few $100 and $50 donations,” said Chris Babb, treasurer of the Blue Steel Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, which held a barbecue plate sale for Patrick Brown, who was injured during action with the United States Marine Corps in Afghanistan.

Babb said in a statement released today, “It is with great pleasure and appreciation that the Blue Steel Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club announces that the fundraiser held at Dunham's Sports for U.S. Marine Sergeant Patrick Brown was a great success. With a big thank you to the community and the Roanoke Valley, the club was able to present Brown and his family with a check for $8,000.73.”

Babb said the club was thankful for Brown “and all veterans for their service and sacrifice. The club would also like to thank the Roanoke Valley community for its support in making this event a success.”

He said the club was appreciative of the volunteers helping to organize the event and those who loaned out or donated services, equipment, and products as well as those who bought plates or made a donation.

Because of the success, Babb said the club is considering making the plate sale an annual event to raise funds for other wounded or disabled veterans. “Obviously, they have all served and sacrificed for us to do things like this,” he said. “We have several veterans in our club. It's just important that we do something for them for all they've done for our country.”
