RRPD blotter: September 18-21

The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following, according to Chief Chuck Hasty:

Friday September 18, 2015

At approximately 10 p.m., Master Officer Gerald Morris responded to a vehicle crash on East Thirteenth Street.

Morris found a parked vehicle was struck by James Wayne Johnston, 23, of Roanoke Rapids.

During the investigation, Morris determined Johnston was impaired and charged him with DWI; careless and reckless; driving while license revoked; possession of drug paraphernalia and child abuse because a child was in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Johnston was given a $2,000 bond and October 12 court date.

Lieutenant Charles Burnette assisted.

Saturday September 19, 2015

At approximately 10:30 p.m., Officer Ryan Cross investigated a collision in the 1200 block of Jefferson Street.

Cross discovered the vehicle struck a residence and left the scene.

Cross learned a neighbor followed the vehicle to a residence in the 900 block of Vance Street and the officer located Pedro Alejandro Canizales, 40, of Roanoke Rapids.

Canizales had visible injuries from the collision to his face and his shirt had marks to further back there was a crash.

Cross arrested and charged Canizales with driving while impaired; no operators license and hit and run with property damage.

He was released to a responsible party and given an October 12 court date.

Burnette assisted.

Sunday September 20, 2015

At approximately 9:30 p.m., Officer Joey Spragins investigated a call of a robbery of a pizza delivery driver in what is traditionally called the no-hundred block of Jackson Street.

The victim told Spragins the business received a call for a delivery to an address on Jackson Street. When the driver arrived, a person described as a black male yelled for the driver.

When the driver approached, two other people described as black males ran around from the side of the residence.

A cell phone, cash and other items were taken from the driver.

Morris and his dog Dozer ran a track ending on Madison Street.

The robbers were described as black males wearing dark clothing and armed with a handgun.

At approximately 9:30 p.m., Cross responded to investigate a call of someone making threats.

The victim told Cross, Kaheel Sha’quan Boone, 18, of Garysburg, sent pictures of their residence threatening to kick in the front door.

The victim showed Cross several text messages and pictures of their residence.

Cross located Boone sitting in a car at a stop sign near the residence and arrested and charged him with cyber stalking.

Boone received a $500 bond and October 21 court date.

Monday September 21, 2015

Lieutenant Charles Vaught arrested Brian Quentin Elford on outstanding warrants for assault on a female, assault with a deadly weapon and kidnapping.

These charges stem from a matter September 16 investigated by Master Officer Gorton Williams and Officer Dale Strickland.

Around 10 a.m. on September 16, the victim reported to Williams and Strickland there was an argument between her and Elford about some Facebook messages.

During the argument Elford allegedly assaulted the victim by hitting, kicking and dragging her from room to room.

Elford also allegedly threatened the victim with a knife during the assault.

The victim escaped and called for help.

The victim was transported for treatment of the injuries and released.

At approximately 4:30 p.m., Master Officer Roy Ball was following up on a drug complaint in the Premier Boulevard area when he encountered Eric Lamont Tillery, 36, of Roanoke Rapids.

Ball received consent to search Tillery’s vehicle and found a small amount of marijuana.

Ball cited Tillery for possession of marijuana and released him until his court date of November 6. Officer Jamie Hardy assisted.

At approximately 9 p.m., Spragins responded to a house fire in the 300 block of Jefferson Street.

Investigation determined the origin of the fire looked suspicious and an investigator was called in to assist.

The SBI was called for assistance.
