The Northampton County Sheriff’s Office received a call for assistance around 9 p.m. Wednesday after a homeowner reported hearing shots fired near their residence, one or two rounds striking the house.

Captain M.D. DeLoatch Sr. said no one was injured and it is not clear why shots were fired in the area off Highway 258 near Murfreesboro.

Investigators collected several shell casings and the homeowner was not able to elaborate.

Sheriff Jack Smith said in a statement he encourages anyone with information to call, regardless how insignificant the information may seem.

The public may call the sheriff's office at 252-534-2611 or Crimestoppers at 252-534-1110.

In another matter, DeLoatch reported the sheriff's office arrested and charged Sylvester Hardy, 48, of Garysburg, with assault inflicting serious bodily injury.

The charges stem from a Saturday night argument on Cal Floyd Road in an area commonly called The Hook.

Hardy, according to DeLoatch, reportedly assaulted the victim, fracturing his eye socket.

While the nature of the argument was not immediately clear, DeLoatch said alcohol use was involved.

The victim was transported to Halifax Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Hardy was jailed on $5,000 secured bond and is scheduled for a court appearance November 9.

“We encourage citizens to try and resolve their differences in a peaceful and non-violent manner,” Smith said in a statement. “If you need assistance please call the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office at 252-534-2611 or dial 911.”
