Halifax County Superior Court for Tuesday will be held in the old district courtroom in the Historic Courthouse after water inundated the superior courtroom on Ferrell Lane.

Judge Alma Hinton's office issued a statement saying those scheduled for superior court today will have their cases heard Tuesday. Court will convene at 10 a.m.

Clerk of Court Becky Spragins said it appears the problem is related to repairs to the drainage system. “We're going to file an insurance claim.”

The superior courtroom sustained significant damage and Spragins expects repairs to take several months to the carpeting and jury seats as well as seats nearest the prosecution table.

No paperwork or computers were damaged.

Downstairs in the vault, where case files are kept, water hit filing cabinets but not files on open shelves.

It is unclear how much repairs will cost, but Spragins said the roof of the courthouse has always been an issue.

The Historic Courthouse is located at 10 North King Street.
