Incumbent Roanoke Rapids City Councilwoman Carol Cowen won her seat on the panel this evening.

Cowen, a retired educator, beat challenger Terry Buffaloe by an 85.71 to 13.90 percent margin, according to unofficial returns.

Carl Ferebee and Ernest C. Bobbitt, who were running unopposed, were re-elected to office.

It was an election in which 11.87 percent of the voters in Halifax County went to the polls.

In the Roanoke Rapids Graded Schools District Board of Education race, Ed Liverman received 645 votes and incumbent Mike Williams 619 votes while Joey Briggs earned 558 votes to get seats on the board of education.

In Enfield, Tracy Joyner, Bud Whitaker and Kent Holmes, all running unopposed, were re-elected to town commissioner seats.

In Halifax, John White, who was running unopposed, was re-elected as mayor.

There will be some question as to who will get one of the five open seats on the Halifax town board.

Randy Birdsong, John Suiter, Barbara Daniels and Lee Daniels all received votes, but there were 22 write-ins also cast.

The county board of elections said this evening it will meet Thursday at 1 p.m. to determine who will get the last seat on the town board.

The same will apply in Hobgood where there were 116 write-ins cast for one of three board seats and Hyman Leggett Jr. and Julian Padgette each received 48.

Write-ins in Littleton received 72 votes for one of three town commission seats while Donald Spragins received 80; Clara Debnam 76 and Gerleen Pitchford 51.

In Scotland Neck, Eddie Braxton was elected mayor with no opposition and James Gunells, Charles Shields and Raymond Watson won town commission seats.

In Weldon, Charlotte Moss and John Smith were the top vote-getters for two Weldon town commission seats.
