Captain A.M. Harris of the City County Drug Task Force said in a statement Corporal Steven Casey of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office was on patrol in the Highway 158 area of Roanoke Rapids when he stopped a vehicle driven by Derek Lee Whitaker.

Harris said Whitaker, 34, reportedly admitted to having a handgun inside the vehicle during the stop, which occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Huckleberry Bottom Road.

The stop resulted in the seizure of 128 grams of crack, marijuana, a handgun and a rifle.

Casey arrested and charged Whitaker for speeding, trafficking cocaine, possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, felony possession of cocaine, maintaining a vehicle or dwelling for a controlled substance, carrying a concealed weapon and possessing marijuana up to one-half ounce.

Whitaker received a $50,000 secured bond with a December 2 court date and was confined to the Halifax County Detention Center.

Corporal P. Trivette of the sheriff's office and the state Highway Patrol assisted.

Harris estimated the street value of the cocaine to be around $7,000.
