A Squad of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department has traditionally supplied Thanksgiving dinners to four area families.

This year they were able to provide seven.

Lieutenant Bruce Norton said the A Squad officers pooled the gift cards given them to by the city to buy the side dishes for the meals and received help from Major Cynthia Bunch of the Roanoke Rapids JROTC program to provide the turkeys.

With the pooling of the gift cards, the officers bought the string beans, yams, desserts and other items.

“This has been an A Squad tradition for the past few years,” Norton said today. “In the past we've been able to feed four families.”

The donation of the turkeys meant more money to help extra people, he said.

The A Squad officers delivered the items Tuesday. “The reactions we got were surprised and overwhelmed, it was welcomed by single mothers and grandparents.”

New Testament Christian Church gave the officers a place to prepare boxes before the delivering them.

A Squad is made up of Norton, Sergeant Terrence Tyler, Master Officer Mark Peck, Jonathan Benthall, Jason Williams, Chris Biggerstaff, Matt Hunsucker and Ariel Burgess.
