An 89-year-old Rhode Island man has been identified as the victim in a crash this morning on Interstate 95.

The state Highway Patrol said this afternoon family members of Samuel H. Carlow, of East Greenwich, did not know why he was in North Carolina.

An autopsy will be performed to determine whether any medical issues play a part in the matter.

Trooper Scott Richardson said earlier today the man died as he drove his pickup south in the right northbound lane of Interstate 95.

Richardson said authorities received a call about a vehicle traveling south in the northbound lane of the interstate.

Less than five minutes later, the Highway Patrol received a call there was a collision between the pickup and a tractor-trailer.

EMS arrived and determined the driver of the pickup was deceased.
