A man wanted in a November 21 larceny at Walmart surrendered today due to social media attention.

Robert Anthony Alves was arrested around 1 a.m. by Officer Ryan Cross, according to a statement by Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Chuck Hasty.

“Tips from the social media post (by the police department) and media outlets helped the police department identify Mr. Alves in this case,” Hasty said. “Mr. Alves stated that he was going to turn himself in because of the attention from the social media sites.”

Cross arrested Alves, of Roanoke Rapids, on outstanding warrants for larceny and possession of stolen goods.

He received a $2,500 bond and December 18 court date.

Sergeant Richie White, Master Officer Gerald Morris and Officer Patrick Smith assisted with the arrest.

The police department originally reported Alves took items from the store and then fled from the loss prevention staff.
