One person is in custody and one is still being sought in the attempted murder of an Emporia police officer Sunday.

Emporia police Chief Ricky Pinksaw confirmed Calvin Evans was taken into custody today and authorities still search for Rakei Stoke, who frequents the Roanoke Rapids area as well as Petersburg, Richmond and beyond.

Pinksaw released a statement earlier this morning saying after six days since the fatal shooting of George Cain III, and the attempted murder of Officer William King, the Emporia Police Department, with assistance from the Virginia State Police have obtained arrest warrants for Stokes of the 200 Block of West End Boulevard and Evans of the 300 Block of West End Boulevard in connection with the attempted murder of King.

“After an exhaustive five days of sifting through evidence and interviewing witnesses, Detective Jerry Wright obtained four arrest warrants,” for Stoke, 25, the statement said.

He faces charges of attempted capital murder; conspiracy to commit capital murder; unlawfully shoot an officer and possession of a firearm after being a convicted felon.

In addition, Evans, 24, who was taken into custody after the statement was released this morning, is charged with conspiracy to commit capital murder.

The Independent Messenger of Emporia reported King was shot when he was placing the person charged in the shooting death of Cain, 22, of Emporia, into his patrol car.

Cain was fatally shot at Smoove Operators. King was hit with a bullet in his right side, which exited through his pelvis region.

Cain was shot in the torso and died at Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center.

Christopher Rayshawn Powell, 26, of Ivor, is charged with first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in the Cain murder and is currently being held at the Southside Regional Jail without bond.

Anyone with any information regarding the whereabouts of Stokes is encouraged to contact either Detective Jerry Wright or Sergeant Stan Allen of the Emporia Police Department at 434-634-2121.
