A Roanoke Rapids woman faces a long hospital stay after she was badly burned Friday night.

The woman's daughter received minor burns and will undergo surgery Tuesday, said her sister, Kaitlinn Jones.

Lorrie Williams, Kaitlinn's mother, received burns over 70 percent of her body. “My mom is minute by minute,” she said “There is no good news. She is going to be in a coma at least six months. Her expected stay in the hospital is a year.”

Kaitlinn's sister, Dallas, is expected “to be just fine.”

Dallas will receive skin graphs after receiving minor burns to the face, arms and legs.

The mother and daughter were burned Friday night as Lorrie tended a trash barrel outside, pouring gasoline on it, Kaitlinn said.

While Lorrie has health insurance, Kaitlinn said family and friends are raising funds for the non-medical bills that will be incurred during her hospital stay as well to take care of her two minor daughters.

Since the matter, there has been an outpouring of concern, prayers and planned fundraisers to meet the needs health insurance won't cover, Kaitlinn said.

A GoFundMe site has been set up for Lorrie and Dallas, which as of this report has raised $2,285.

Kaitlinn's hope is the funds raised will help make the eventual transition home easier for her mother, a paramedic with Halifax County EMS, who also works for Gaston EMS.

“I've received numerous messages on Facebook, phone calls and (requests) for fundraisers to pay her bills to keep everything going like it is now,” Kaitlinn said.

A single mother of five girls with two grandchildren and one on the way, Kaitlinn said her mother is tough, but kind. “She'll do anything for anybody. She has an outspoken, outgoing personalty. My mom has always been there for me, she's very supportive. She supports us on our decisions and taught me to be the mother I am to my two kids.”

Lorrie has been a paramedic for five years. “She's independent, she is very much a strong willed person who woke up one day and decided,” to become a paramedic. “She loves helping people, that's what she strives to do.”

Kaitlinn said inquiries for other donations or fundraising ideas beyond GoFundMe may be sent to her by calling 252-538-1414. “We just want to keep her comfort zone when she comes home and take care of the two minor kids.”
