King Day observances begin Sunday with wreath-laying

The first of numerous King Day celebrations begin Sunday with a wreath-laying at Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Roanoke Rapids.

It is an event sponsored by the Roanoke Valley Southern Christian Leadership Conference and will be held at 3 p.m. with a clergy processional. King was a co-founder of the SCLC and its first national president.

The park is located at Virginia Avenue and Wyche Street.

Seating will be available and refreshments will be served.

The following week there will be more events held as the Halifax County Black Caucus and the Halifax County Chapter of the NAACP will host the third annual Martin Luther King Jr. birthday commemoration on January 17, also set at MLK Park in Roanoke Rapids.

This commemoration is set for 3 p.m. and there will also be a wreath-laying.

Two young people whose parents were founders of HCBC will speak and local youth groups will provide music.

On January 18, the caucus will hold the 16th County-Wide King Day celebration.

The Let’s Talk about the Issues-State of the County event will be held at the Tillery Community Center, 321 Community Center Road in Tillery, and will begin at noon.

On January 18 at 10 a.m. the 12th MLK Parade will be held on Main Street in Littleton.

The line-up will begin at 9:15 a.m. near the post office on Mosby Avenue.

Participation is open to businesses, churches, school clubs and community organizations.

The event is sponsored by Oak Grove Baptist Church in Littleton and Piney Grove Baptist Church in Halifax.

At noon on January 18, the 14th MLK program will be held at Oak Grove Baptist Church on Highway 158 outside Littleton.

The event is co-sponsored by Piney Grove.

At 1:45 p.m. on January 18, also at Oak Grove, the 2016 MLK Community Service Project will be held with Workforce Investment Opportunity assisting 16- to 24-year-olds with re-entry to school and job training skills.

Workforce Investment Opportunity will also be collecting school and office supplies, snacks and paper goods.

In Northampton County, there will be an 8 a.m. breakfast on January 18 at Branch's Chapel Baptist Church in Rich Square. The speaker will be Reverend Christopher Haywood.

At 10 a.m. in Jackson on January 18, participants will be lining up at the Northampton County Water Department on Highway 305 for the annual Unity March to the Cultural and Wellness Center a short distance away.

A celebration program will start soon after the march.

The speaker will be Reverend Travis Judkins from Mount Olive Baptist Church in Bertie County.

Sheila Evans, director of the county department of social services and Rebecca Stapleton, director of the county senior center center, will present information on healthcare.

Monica Smith-Woofter will give a tribute to children and there will be praise dances and performances by the GOPP Choir.
