Halifax County Sheriff Wes Tripp said Sergeant S. Rodwell went to the Day Trail residence of Cornelius Ray Morgan, 40, around 1 p.m.

After noticing drug paraphernalia in the living room, Rodwell contacted the City County Drug Task Force and Captain A.M. Harris applied for, and was granted, a search warrant.

Morgan, who has a lengthy criminal record, was not home at the time.

During the search of the residence cocaine, marijuana, two marijuana plants, and several items of drug paraphernalia were seized. The drug paraphernalia included two homemade crack pipes, homemade push rods, a knife, and plastic baggies.

The marijuana plants were located growing in a pot in the bathtub of the residence.

Harris obtained warrants for the arrest of Morgan on charges of felony possession of cocaine; possession of marijuana up to a half-ounce; maintaining a dwelling for controlled substances; possess marijuana paraphernalia and manufacture marijuana.

Tripp said this evening the charges filed against Morgan are not expected to have an impact on his status as a sex offender.

He has been on the registry since February of 1998.
