RRPD blotter: January 15-17, 2016

The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following, according to Chief Chuck Hasty:

Friday January 15, 2016

At approximately 9 a.m., Officer Joey Spragins arrested and charged Joquelle Charmeka Menefee, 23, of Roanoke Rapids, with being a fugitive after she surrendered to the officer.

Menefee was wanted for grand larceny by the Greensville County Sheriff’s Office and received a $5,000 bond and February 12 court date pending extradition to Virginia.

At approximately 9:15 a.m., Master Officer Gerald Morris and Officer Ariel Burgess responded to a possible fraud call at ProBuild.

Staff reported Stephanie Jean Gussler, 19, of Jackson, came in and made purchases, presenting checks for payment on several different days.

Investigation determined the checking account was closed.

Gussler, with assistance of the Northampton County Sheriff's Office, was arrested and charged with three counts of obtaining property by false pretense.

She was jailed on $20,000 bond and received a February 17 court date.

The investigation is ongoing and more charges could be pending.

Saturday January 16, 2016

At approximately 1 a.m., Officer Dale Strickland responded to a fight call in the 100 block of Jefferson Street.

Strickland located Ryan Keith Grizzard, 19, Joshua Scott Matthews, 16, Corey Allen Johnson, 18, Karen Nicole Alston, 16, and Taylor Blair Newsome, 18, at the residence.

Officers learned there was a disagreement over a cell phone and detected the odor of alcohol.

They were cited for consuming alcohol under age and have February 19 court dates.

They were released to responsible parents or guardians until their court dates.

Sergeant Mike Moseley and officers Adam Salmon and Alex Green assisted.

At approximately 11 a.m., Sergeant Richie White responded to a larceny call at The Store Next Door.

Staff reported Bernard Lynn Harris, 55, of Roanoke Rapids, concealed items inside his coat and then walked out.

White located items inside the store and then located Harris, who was arrested and charged with shoplifting concealment of goods. Harris received a $500 bond and February 12 court date.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., Morris and Burgess responded to a call about two women soliciting money near Arby's.

The officers located the women inside the restaurant and one gave a fake name.

The officers arrested Betty Jean Braddy, 48, of Roanoke Rapids, for resisting/delaying/obstructing and served two outstanding orders for her arrest.

Braddy received a $26,415 bond and February 12 court date.

At approximately 7:30 p.m, Officer Jeffrey Mason responded to a larceny call at Walmart.

Loss prevention reported two people later identified as Marion Islar Rowe, 18, and James Alexander Mallory III, both of Roanoke Rapids, were still in the store with items concealed.

Moseley located them inside the store and both were cited for shoplifting concealment of goods.

They were released until their February 19 court dates.

Sunday January 17, 2016

At approximately 2 a.m., Strickland was on patrol in the West Tenth Street and Oakley Avenue area when he noticed a person having difficulty walking.

When he went to check he noticed the person, later identified as Joey Nathaniel Medlin, 40, of Roanoke Rapids, throw something to the ground.

Strickland recovered the item thrown, which was determined to be marijuana. Strickland cited Medlin, who was released until his February 19 court date, with possession of schedule VI.

At approximately 2 p.m., Morris and Burgess responded to a call of vehicle driven recklessly in the Roses parking lot.

Officers located the vehicle parked in the fire lane in front of the store.

Jackson Keith Cooke, 25, of Roanoke Rapids, the driver of the vehicle, had a concealed gun and knife in his possession.

He was arrested and charged with two counts of carrying a concealed weapon as well as possession of schedule VI and possession of drug paraphernalia, the drug counts filed after he was searched.

Cooke received a $1,000 bond and February 12 court date.
