Starks
Detective Willie Murphy Jr. of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office said the man charged today — Gary Starks Jr. of Roanoke Rapids — was friends with Justice Moses, who was shot in the home invasion, which occurred at a residence in the Highway 48 area of Roanoke Rapids near Carolina Rest Home Road.
Murphy said the two knew each other through a mutual acquaintance. He said investigation shows the Monday home invasion may be related to one which occurred in the Highway 48 area of Roanoke Rapids on January 3 and led to the arrests of Marvin Adams and Rakino Whitaker. The detective declined to elaborate on the possible links between the two cases.
Starks, 21, has been charged with felony aid and abet; conspire to break and enter; first-degree burglary and assault with a deadly weapon. He was jailed on $25,000 bond and awaits a February 24 court date.
Investigation of the Monday morning burglary began when deputies were dispatched to the Highway 48 area after a report the pair came to confront the 50-year-old victim.
A scuffle ensued when Moses allegedly pulled out a handgun while Starks fled. During the scuffle Moses, Murphy confirmed, was shot with his own weapon and has since been treated and released from medical care. He is currently detained in the Halifax County jail on $100,000 bond and has the same court date as Starks.
