Roads remain slick this morning and law enforcement advises staying off them unless for work or emergency purposes.

“Interstate 95 still has slick spots,” Trooper J.D. Warren Jr. of the state Highway Patrol said. “All other roads are still very slick and ice-covered.”

Warren confirmed a statement sent by Gaston Fire and Rescue about a wreck Friday shortly before 1:30 p.m. in the southbound lane of I-95 involving a small sport utility vehicle and tractor-trailer.

The victim in that crash was hospitalized.

Gaston Chief Ed Porter Jr. reported in the statement there was heavy damage to the driver side door of the SUV and the driver was trapped.

Both southbound lanes were closed and the vehicle was stabilized using step cribbing. Using hydraulic rescue cutters and spreaders, firefighters removed the roof, drivers door, and drivers side B-post. The driver was assessed and treated on scene by Northampton County paramedics and EMTs from Gaston EMS. The driver was transported by Northampton County EMS to Halifax Regional Medical Center and reported in stable condition.

Meanwhile Halifax County Sheriff Wes Tripp said this morning deputies shuttled around 50 nurses to their jobs at Halifax Regional and nursing homes. “It's just another added service of your sheriff's office,” he said.

Roanoke Rapids police Chief Chuck Hasty said drivers in the city still need to take their time. “The roads are still bad.”

In a statement this morning, Dominion Power reported the biggest trouble spots have been in the Norfolk and Virginia Beach areas.

As of this report no Halifax County customers were without power and only four were reported without power in Northampton County.
