The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following, according to Captain Bobby Martin:

Monday February 22, 2016

Officer Joey Spragins responded to a disturbance call in the 500 block of Maple Street.

Upon arriving, Spragins heard yelling and screaming coming from the home.

Spragins entered the home and encountered Sarah Tuck, 28, who was involved in the matter.

Spragins attempted to calm Tuck but eventually placed her under arrest for striking someone while in his presence.

Tuck, of Roanoke Rapids, was charged with simple physical assault and criminal contempt.

She was placed under $2,000 bond and has a March 11 court date.

There were no serious injuries.

Tuesday February 23, 2016

At approximately 12:42 p.m., Officer Patrick Smith responded to a vehicle collision at State Employees Credit Union.

One of the cars involved in the collision left the scene. Smith received information from witnesses on the vehicle description and the route it took.

Officer R. Cross assisted Smith and the driver, Ebony Long, 24, of Jackson, was stopped on Sam Powell Dairy Road.

Long was charged with hit and run, leaving the scene of an accident, property damage and failure to reduce speed.

During processing, Long was discovered to have an outstanding warrant, which was also served.

She received a $1,500 bond and March 9 court date.

“Thanks to the public's assistance the officers were able to locate the subject and charge them accordingly,” Martin said. “Officer Patrick Smith did a great job following up with given information and had great assistance from Officer Ryan Cross.”

At approximately 2:39 p.m., Officer C. Byrum received a call about a wanted person at Dollar Tree.

Byrum, Master Officer G. Morris and Lieutenant C. Burnette saw the person, later identified as Arkies Sommerville, as they entered the store.

While conducting a check for weapons, items belonging to Dollar Tree were found.

Sommerville was charged with larceny, possession of stolen property, shoplifting and concealment of goods.

He received a $1,500 bond and April 22 court date.

At approximately 8:22 p.m., Officer J. T. Mason was dispatched to the area of West Fourth Street on a drug complaint.

Mason discovered the call to be domestic and he and Lieutenant Jeff Baggett were allowed to enter the home.

They found Bryant Newell, 27, of Roanoke Rapids, hiding in an upstairs closet.

Officers learned there was a domestic protective order against Newell and Mason charged him with the violation of the order.

Newell was jailed without opportunity for bond until his March 18 court date.

At approximately 8:12 p.m., Officer A. Green responded to a hit and run in the area of Hamilton and Tenth streets.

Green noticed a vehicle in the intersection and spoke with the owner who told him the other vehicle struck him in the side. The victim reported the driver, later identified as Kenneth Warren, 29, of Roanoke Rapids, looked at him, made an obscene gesture with his middle finger and drove off.

A witness gave Green details and a short time later Baggett and Mason had Warren in custody.

Green charged Warren with no operators license, operating a vehicle with no insurance and hit and run. He received a $1,000 bond and March 18 court date.

“The officers involved in this investigation did an outstanding job locating this subject in reference to this incident, a show of great teamwork,” Martin said.

At approximately 9:17 p.m. Baggett was dispatched to the 500 block of Jewel Street on a disturbance call.

Baggett learned one person assaulted another with a knife and damaged the victim's car.

The alleged suspect was identified as Jessie A. King, 31, of Roanoke Rapids.

As Baggett investigated, he received a call King was back in the area causing another disturbance.

Baggett saw King walking towards him but he ran from the officer.

Warrants were filed for King's arrest on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, injury to personal property, and resisting a public officer.

Wednesday February 24, 2016

At approximately 10:59 p.m., Green responded to a disturbance call in the area of Tenth and Hamilton streets.

The victim reported a man, later identified as Willie Cooper, 32, of Roanoke Rapids, approached him needing work or money as he attempted to take money from the victim.

Through further investigation Green charged Cooper with attempted common law robbery.

Cooper received a $5,000 bond and March 18 court date.

Baggett, Sergeant M. Moseley and Mason assisted.

Officer T. Strickland was dispatched to the Holiday Inn Express on a complaint of drug activity.

Strickland, Moseley and Master Officer J. A. Salmon found items consistent with drug paraphernalia including syringes, tin foil, baggies and a drink can burned on the bottom.

Samuel Blankenship, 31, of Goldsboro, and Jennifer Dornhecker, 36, of Lexington, were cited to court on April 15 for possession of drug paraphernalia and escorted from the premises.

Thursday February 25, 2016

At approximately 9:03 p.m., Salmon was observing traffic in the area of Summit Avenue and Boykins Street when he noticed a vehicle come through the intersection and commit a traffic violation.

After the stop, Salmon detected the odor of marijuana and found it in the vehicle.

Johnnie Ingram, 21, of Roanoke Rapids, was cited to court on April 15 for simple possession of marijuana and issued a city ordinance ticket for the traffic violation.

At approximately 4:25 p.m., Smith responded to a shoplifting call at Walmart.

Loss prevention reported two Jam speakers were taken but recovered and two people, one a juvenile, and the other Jahquel Blyther, 16, of Roanoke Rapids, were detained.

The juvenile will be charged with shoplifting and concealment of goods through Juvenile Services and Blyther was charged with the same counts, but received a $500 bond and March 18 court date.

At approximately 1:12 p.m., school resource officer Rex Stainback contacted Burnette about a student allegedly in possession of narcotics on school grounds.

The juvenile, who was released to a responsible party — parents — will be charged with possession of marijuana while on school property through Juvenile Services.
