An April wallet theft from Roanoke Rapids High School has been tied to a Petersburg, Virginia, man currently in custody in Dinwiddie County.

Roanoke Rapids police Chief Chuck Hasty said the Dinwiddie County Sheriff's Office and the Commonwealth of Virginia Probation and Parole Unit arrested Cortez Lenardo Harris, 31, on June 24 for being a fugitive from justice in North Carolina.

The arrest warrants were obtained following an investigation by Roanoke Rapids Investigator Gorton Williams.

Williams obtained warrants for Harris's arrest on charges of breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, larceny and resisting, delaying and obstructing an officer.

The charges stem from April 28 when it was reported someone walked onto school property and stole a wallet.

Harris is currently being held without the opportunity bond pending extradition to North Carolina.

“Investigator Williams worked with several different agencies to identify Mr. Harris and to determine his location,” Hasty said in a statement. “The cooperation and communication between the agencies was instrumental in solving this case and getting Mr. Harris into custody.”
