The Roanoke Canal Museum and Trail will receive more PBS exposure.

Already planned to be featured in a documentary, the museum will also be featured in an upcoming segment of a public television series — North Carolina Weekend, which airs on UNC-TV.

A film crew from the show visited Saturday to shoot a segment that will air in the coming months, according to producer Clay Johnson. “The state is filled with treasures like this that people don’t know about. The trail seems like the perfect place to walk or walk your dog. It seems great for all kinds of recreational uses. The show provides us with an opportunity to show people great places to visit in their own state.”

Johnson and videographer Alan Brown came to the museum upon the invitation of Cultural Resources Leader Rodney D. Pierce, who e-mailed North Carolina Weekend Executive Producer David Hardy in July to extend the invite.

“David asked, and I said yes,” Johnson stated when discussing Hardy asking him about shooting at the museum and trail. “This fits into destinations that people would want to visit to learn North Carolina’s history and enjoy the outdoors.”

Johnson, who interviewed Pierce for the segment, feels the facility’s profile and patronage will increase as they have for other places around the state that were featured on the program. “People say they’ve got a tremendous response after our segments,” he said.

The Roanoke Canal Museum and Trail is located at 15 Jackson Street Extension in Roanoke Rapids and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
