The Halifax County Sheriff's Office is attempting to learn the identity and locate family members of a man who was found lying next to Interstate 95 in the southbound lane near the 159 mile marker Tuesday night.

Major Scott Hall said the man has no knowledge of his name or where he is originally from.

He had no identifying papers or other forms of identification when deputies found him around 7 p.m.

The 159 mile marker is in the Enfield area just south of Robbie's.

“He is very disoriented and unable to provide us with his identity or where he is from. It appears he is suffering from memory loss or some such problem which is not allowing him to give any information,” Hall said.

The sheriff's office is seeking information from anyone who recognizes him or has seen him at any location or store. “Any facility where we can look at video footage to retrace his steps.”

Hall said the man, who is in the care of a nearby facility, appears to be OK physically.

Hall said in a statement around 7 p.m. the Halifax County Communications Center began receiving reports that a man was lying next to the interstate.

Lieutenant George Evans arrived and found the man lying supine and disoriented. The sheriff’s office has been working with other agencies since Evans located the gentleman in an attempt to identify him so he can be reunited with his family and loved ones.

He is between 50- to 60-years-old; stands 6-feet tall and weighs about 170 pounds.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the sheriff's office at 252-583-8201 or 252-583-1991.
