Roanoke Rapids police have arrested a man for the Tuesday break-in of an animal hospital and are investigating two other business break-ins that occurred with in the same time span.

Tuesday around 11:30 p.m. Officer Chris Biggerstaff and members of A Squad responded to a call at Roanoke Animal Hospital on Julian R. Allsbrook Highway and found a large window shattered.

During the investigation officers located a suspicious person in the area and were allegedly able to tie the man, Alfred Short, to the crime.

They arrested Short for breaking and entering and damage to property. Short received a $1,500 bond and a January 22 court date.

Damage to the window was approximately $600.

Motive was unclear as nothing was taken, although Captain Andy Jackson said theft of animal medicine is a problem around the country. There have not been, however, any reported cases of veterinary medicine stolen in Roanoke Rapids.

Jackson said two other businesses in the area had damaged windows and police are investigating. Total damage to three businesses is estimated around $2,000.
