A registered sex offender in Roanoke Rapids has been charged with gaining access to, and using, two social media websites, a violation of the terms of his sex offender status.

Detective Chris Scott of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office said this afternoon there is no evidence Michael Keith Taylor, 34, who was arrested today, attempted to use the websites Facebook and Second Life for predatory purposes.

He was, however, charged with two felony counts of sex offender use of a social media website and failing to disclose a new online identifier to the sheriff's office.

Scott said in a news release the charges are based on an investigation in which Taylor was found to be allegedly accessing at least social media accounts.

He was jailed on $3,500 bond and has an April 2 court date.
